the all-time board →This ranks club quality + measured output, not isolated individual skill, so the regulars of the strongest club tend to cluster near the top. That’s the prior working as built, not a bug: pulling a star clear of a strong-club squad-mate needs the per-action value layer, which is in progress. how the numbers are made →

By position
The same ranked board, split by role, so a keeper is measured against keepers and a striker against strikers, not all in one ladder. Strongest first within each line, up to ten.

top 10Midfielders
top 10Attackers
top 10Not yet enough data · unranked
Sourced and rated, but on club, nation and age alone, we hold no individual performance reading for them yet (no gradable World Cup night, and no pre-tournament output term for the role). Rather than rank a number we can’t defend, we list them here. Each one joins the board above the moment a measured night gives us something individual to stand on.
How this is ranked
The order is a confidence-adjusted score, not a bare quality number. We start from each player’s quality prior, his club’s league-adjusted Elo, an age curve, and, for attackers and keepers, a measured output term. We then fold in how he has actually played at this World Cup: his own de-confounded performance, role-split from the sourced match stats, shrunk for sample size so two good nights don’t run away with it. Finally we subtract a penalty for how much we can’t individually measure him, so a player priced on club and age alone (most defenders, where no honest box metric exists yet) is ranked conservatively rather than confidently. We rank what we know, and we show how much we know: every row carries its ± band and data tier, and the “WC perf” line is the tournament points folded into the order. A player we hold no individual reading for, priced on club + age alone, is not ranked among those we can measure; he is listed separately below, unranked, until a measured night earns him a place. Fixed formula, published weights, never tuned on the games we grade; forward-only, sourced, dated. The green and red arrows are the rating’s movement inside this World Cup, from the first whistle on 11 Jun.
What this is, and isn’t. The quality prior anchors on a player’s club, the team signal closest to him, weighted far above his nation so a star on a weak country isn’t buried. But a club rating is shared by all eleven regulars, and the measured-output term is deliberately small, so the strongest club’s squad clusters near the top and a genuine star sits close to a solid club-mate. This is an honest club-quality plus measured-output ranking, not yet an isolated read of individual skill, and the bands say exactly that. The fix that separates the individual from his club is a per-action value layer (valuing what a player’s own actions are worth, independent of his team); it is designed and in progress.
