  • GBP 100m plus a heavy wage bill is a high bar to recoup even at a prime age.

Useful Overpay

For United it delivered what the deal was actually for. Casemiro transformed the midfield in his first season, arguably the team's most important player, and gave the control and leadership the side had lacked. The second season tailed off as age and the Premier League grind told, and the wages and nil resale were exactly the cost the club signed up for. A steep price, but real football value bought when it was most needed.

Elite Sale for Real Madrid. Cashing a large fee for a 30-year-old and reinvesting in the next generation of the midfield was, in market terms, close to ideal timing.

Transfer Disaster

For United the deal did not come close to its bar. Antony returned only a handful of goals and assists across two seasons, well short of the elite output the fee demanded, lost his starting place, and by January 2025 was loaned to Real Betis. The football never justified the price, and the price made the football impossible to justify.

Seller · Ajax

Elite Sale for Ajax. Having signed Antony cheaply from Sao Paulo, Ajax banked a near-record fee at the peak of his market - one of the best pure trades of the window regardless of what happened next.

Receipts are ProofXI editorial verdicts on public deals, with reported fees and sourced claims.
